Lew Wallace collection, 1882-1926.

Summary: Collection consists primarily of letters concerning Lew Wallace and donations of various items for display in the Lew Wallace Room at the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe. Includes three letters from Wallace to Santa Fe attorney Eugene A. Fiske (1882, 1897, 1900), and a 1909 letter from Wallace to A.J. Wissler confirming parts of "Ben Hur" were written at the Palace of the Governors. Other letters are from Catherine Wallace, Henry Wallace, and Paul A.F. Walter to officials at the Palace of the Governors concerning the donation and display of Lew Wallace materials. Collection also includes "The Home of Ben-Hur," a biographical book on Wallace by Thomas B. Nicholson (Crawfordsville, Ind.: Lacey and Nicholson, 1900).

Lewis "Lew" Wallace was born on April 10, 1827, in Brookville, Indiana. He was the second of four sons born to Esther French Wallace (née Test) and David Wallace. Lew's father, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, left the military in 1822 and moved to Brookville, where he established a law practice and entered Indiana politics.
